A Proclamation for November
A PROCLAMATION BY COMPASSIONATE POMONA, A CONSORTIUM OF CARING INDIVIDUALS AND AGENCIES IN THE CITY OF POMONA, PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER 2020 AS “GRATITUDE’’ MONTH IN THE CITY OF POMONA
WHEREAS, as a Compassionate Pomona—in concurrence with the Charter for Compassion which the City of Pomona proclaimed on April 2nd, 2018—we continue to focus on thoughts and actions that promote compassion and inner and outer peace; and
WHEREAS, in alignment with the goal of compassion, Compassionate Pomona has identified “Gratitude” as a value which supports the Charter for Compassion, particularly in the midst of the current Covid epidemic; and
WHEREAS, during the month of November, when we continue to experience physical separation from loved ones with whom we would normally share the National Thanksgiving holiday; and
WHEREAS, this time of unusual solitude allows us to intentionally focus our thoughts gratefully on life, health, family, community, and safety; and
WHEREAS, contemplating gratitude makes us aware of the positive aspects of our existence increasing our sense of wellbeing making us happier, better-adjusted and more resilient; and
WHEREAS, gratitude improves relationships by making people friendlier and more likable, helps deepen relationships and strengthens marriages; and
WHEREAS, gratitude is more than saying “thank you”, it is more than a feeling, it is a practice, a way of life-participation; and
WHEREAS, gratitude increases success by increasing focus, productivity, goal achievement and self-esteem; and
WHEREAS, research shows that practicing gratitude dramatically improves overall health and wellbeing by enhancing mood, decreasing stress, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, improving the immune system, pain management, relaxation and sleep. Grateful people tend to have fewer stress-related illnesses, experience less depression, have lower blood pressure, and are more physically fit; and
WHEREAS, schools, businesses, and governmental and non-profit agencies can encourage and support projects and programs to engage our community in positive activities which foster the practice of gratitude, and
WHEREAS, Compassionate Pomona encourages all Pomonans to embrace “Gratitude” through intention and action and to use “#valuesPomona” to share this movement on social media, thus integrating “Gratitude” into the daily life of our community.
