October Proclamation

A PROCLAMATION BY COMPASSIONATE POMONA,
A CONSORTIUM OF CARING INDIVIDUALS AND AGENCIES

IN THE CITY OF POMONA,
PROCLAIMING OCTOBER 2020 AS

“HUGS AND POSITIVIVITY IN THE TIME OF COVID” MONTH

IN THE CITY OF POMONA

WHEREAS, as a Compassionate Pomona—in concurrence with the Charter for
Compassion which the City of Pomona proclaimed on April 2nd, 2018—we continue to
focus on thoughts and actions that promote compassion and inner and outer peace; and
WHEREAS, in alignment with the goal of compassion, Compassionate Pomona has
identified “Hugs and Positivity in the Time of Covid” as values which support the Charter for
Compassion; and

WHEREAS, during the month of October, as we continue to experience physical distancing
combined with apparent national political and social divisions, we yearn for the connection
and the security reflected in shared and lived values; and

WHEREAS, during our quarantined lives we can more easily embrace contemplation in
place of the busy-ness of our previously non-virus-infected world; and

WHEREAS, our new-found opportunity for contemplation allows and encourages us to
select our preoccupations, to self-guide our thoughts toward positive reflection, to breath
hope and trust back into our lives, to envision ourselves and others acting positively upon
our best human traits, and to imagine how we can better place ourselves within our fragile
planet; and

WHEREAS, since positive thoughts lead to positive results, we can direct our energies with
intention toward positive outcomes, and we can shun personal, communal, and national
negativity; and

WHEREAS, while human failures vividly abound, seemingly never ending, we can
steadfastly and positively aspire toward fairness, restorative justice, and eventually keep the
beloved promises at the heart of our nationhood; and

WHEREAS, in our isolation we remember how last October we could greet each other with
a physical hug, embracing our need for connection and affection, affirming our trust in each
other, and our place in creation; and

WHEREAS, until we can physically embrace again, we can individually make time to slowly
breath and contemplate a hug with those people we know; we can envision a safe and
loving place for those nameless people who need our compassion; and we can wish all to
be well and at peace; and

WHEREAS, we now have opportunities to connect in new ways via the Internet, to host
conversations and exchange of ideas, to invent interactive (but socially distanced) games,
to learn new approaches to arts and crafts, to poetry, to music, to theater, and to education
itself; and

WHEREAS, schools, businesses, and governmental and non-profit agencies can
encourage and support projects and programs to engage our community in positive
activities which foster friendship and respect; and

WHEREAS, Compassionate Pomona encourages all Pomonans to embrace “Hugs and
Positivity in the Time of Covid” through intention and action and to use “#valuesPomona” to
share this movement on social media, thus integrating “Hugs and Positivity in the Time of
Covid” into the daily life of our community.

NOW, THEREFORE, COMPASSIONATE POMONA does hereby proclaim

October 2020
As the Month of

“Hugs and Positivity in the Time of Covid”
