A Proclamation for August
A PROCLAMATION BY COMPASSIONATE POMONA, A CONSORTIUM OF CARING INDIVIDUALS AND AGENCIES IN THE CITY OF POMONA, PROCLAIMING AUGUST 2020 AS “FRIENDSHIP & RESPECT’’ MONTH IN THE CITY OF POMONA
WHEREAS, as a Compassionate Pomona—in concurrence with the Charter for Compassion which the City of Pomona proclaimed on April 2nd, 2018—we continue to focus on thoughts and actions that promote compassion and inner and outer peace; and
WHEREAS, in alignment with the goal of compassion, Compassionate Pomona has identified “Friendship & Respect” as actions and values which support the Charter for Compassion; and
WHEREAS, during the month of August as we continue our individual and community efforts to make our world healthy and safe from the corona virus, we are more aware and appreciative of the blessing that friendships bring to our daily lives; and
WHEREAS, we look forward to the time when we can physically congregate with family, friends, and colleagues, while in the meantime, we create new ways to touch each other’s lives and to refresh our connectedness; and
WHEREAS, with the greatest hope we believe that respect foreach other as human beings and fellow inhabitants of our beautiful and broken world can make us healthy as neighborhoods, communities, states, nations, and a planet; and
WHEREAS, we can learn to respect others because we share and appreciate that human need to be loved, to be accepted, and to be included is just as existential as food and shelter; and
WHEREAS, just as we can see ourselves in others, we can also learn to respect the way that our differences make us stronger, more lovely, more complex, and more whole; and
WHEREAS, with the novel requirement to “social distance” ourselves, we also have opportunities to connect in new ways via the Internet, to host conversations and exchange of ideas, to invent interactive (but socially distanced) games, to learn new approaches to arts and crafts, to poetry, to music, to theater, and to education itself; and
WHEREAS, “social distancing” can lead to connection and increased respect as we use this tjme to learn more about each other, our cultural backgrounds, beliefs, dreams, struggles, and fears; and
WHEREAS, schools, businesses, and governmental and non-profit agencies can encourage and support projects and programs to engage our community in positive activities which foster friendship and respect; and
WHEREAS, Compassionate Pomona can encourage all Pomonans to embrace “Friendship & Respect” through intention and action and to use “#valuesPomona” to share this movement on social media, thus integrating “Friendship and Respect” into the daily life of our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, COMPASSIONATE POMONA does hereby proclaim the month of August 2020 as the month of
